Have you been living on autopilot?
Coasting through life can be a recipe for regret later. Here are nine steps to take to get from where you are, to where you want to be.
1. Figure out what you want.
If you do not know where you want to end up, it will be difficult to arrive there. Take some time to think about what you want your ‘big picture’ to look like.
Some questions to ask yourself when doing this are:
What areas of my life do I want to improve?
Which relationships would I like to focus on developing?
If I could experience anything, what would it be?
Creating a vision board can be a powerful process is identifying your goals and can bring you clarity about what you want your future to look like.
2. Write down everything you could do to achieve your future vision.
There are things that aren’t within your control, but there are also many things that are. Making a list of action steps will empower you to see what you can do to create the life you want. As the saying goes, nothing changes, if nothing changes, and without action you will remain as you are.
By making a long-detailed list of what you can DO to make progress you will feel a sense of excitement because you are taking charge of your life. Once you have completed your list, ask yourself another question to level it up…
What else can I do to create the life of my dreams?
3. Consider what you need to learn.
As you reflect on where you want to go, think about what it is you don’t know, and need to learn. Awareness is the first step to all change so as you get yourself aware of what you need to learn, the sooner you will be able to educate yourself to create change. What often holds people back is the lack of know-how, and although this can be a real obstacle, there is a world of resources available to you to figure it out.
What do I need to learn to achieve my goals?
4. Decide what is stopping you.
Often, what holds people back is not recognized because people don’t take the time to think about what is. As you think about where you want to go, I recommend you ask yourself what is stopping you from getting it. If you recognize what is holding you back, and what you can do it about it, you are putting yourself in a position of power to create change.
On a scale of 1-10, what would make me a 10?
How can I take control of my life?
5. Consider what kind of support you need.
It is said success is a team sport. I believe it is. You have the power to create whatever life success you choose for yourself, however, it is true we all need people to support us at times. Think about your grandest vision and consider who and what you need to support you in achieving it.
Who will be behind you encouraging you and supporting you?
What do you need to put in place to help you get where you want to go?
There is always a way to achieve and the fastest path to success is by having a support team, and plan in place.
6. Focus on Progress.
Small achievements will encourage you to keep going. Make it a daily practice to write down all your small wins and accomplishments. This will help you focus on the progress you are making and will give you more inspiration to keep going.
Ask yourself each day…
What positive steps have I taken to move forward towards where I want to go?
7. Believe in yourself and never ever stop… unless your vision changes.
In order to achieve, you will need to believe in yourself. By choosing to believe in your potential to get anything you want to happen in your life, you will take steps forward and begin achieving. This causes a domino affect where once you achieve something small, you will believe more. Eventually, you will not have to try to believe consciously, you will KNOW that you really can do anything you put your mind to. Believe, achieve, succeed and never, ever quit.
If your vision changes, that’s a different story as this is your life and you can change your mind anytime you want to.
Consistently ask yourself…
Has my vision changed?
8. Take intentional action.
Nothing great was every achieved without action. This is your life and it is your responsibility to create the life you want. That will require action. Each day get up and make a choice to do something to make progress towards what you want.
Each day make a plan by asking yourself:
What intentional action steps am I taking today to get me where I want to go?
9. Enjoy the journey.
As important as it is to focus on what you want and where you are going, it is the journey, not the destination that matters most. Enjoy your life. The highs, the lows and every opportunity you have to live and lead another day.
Each day, ask yourself…
What was wonderful about my life today?
